Update
Dear Diplomat Members,
As usual, not a dull moment around here lately! Our CDCSD Asian Celebration follows immediately after our Annual Meeting (same day same place) this time and we are abuzz with preparations. Smartest thing we did lately was bring on Paige Barry, an Event Planner.
She has helped us seek sponsors (THANKS TO YOU!) and helped make the Silent Auction more interesting. IF I were you, two $500 round trip airline tickets would get me off the couch and over to Marina Village on the 12th of June to bid.
We sent you an RSVP with a stamp, removing all barriers to responding we hoped. Look forward to hearing from you any minute now. Ambassador and Chin-Yeh Hostler bought a table and have some very interesting guests coming.
Hope to see you there too.
Members Jeanne and Mickey Flynn opened their lovely home (and I do mean lovely. I want to live there.) for a “Welcome to the United States’ picnic for the May delegation of Turkmen here to learn about Tourism.
I met Joy and Dean Hanna there whose names I have seen in the Member Directory for three years now (yes, my oh my, three years this month)! and finally met them! They are long time members and it was great to greet them.
CDCSD is a nice mix of our longest-time members woven in with the new members who come to us each month now.
We have been asking more and more of our members lately and you have been stepping up and saying yes. Thank you! The vitality in this part of our organization inspires us here in the office. We ask and you help.
Hallelujah! Courtney Giordano has completed her Masters degree from San Diego State!! Undergrad from UCSD and now this! We are having a Relief Celebration in her honor. Done. Complete. Whew. Marvelous.
Intern Johanna is leaving us tomorrow after 6 months of helping. Impressive. She is off to her native Sweden to marry the love of her life! Interns Calvin and Paulina from UCSD are half way thru interning with us and Peter is here for as long as he wants to be. They all do anything we ask of them. It is like having free employees who are highly talented to add to our highly talented team! A nice mutual exchange. And that is after all what we are about. Exchanges. Face to face with the world. Promoting understanding among humans for 29 years and still going, and still growing.
Glad you are with us in this work,

Cath DeStefano
Executive Director

3.April and May Turkmenistan Visitors Bring Much Fun and Joy
Fun Awaits the Arriving Turkmen at Lindbergh!

We are grateful for the serendipitous event that connected us with Kirt Edwards (in traditional Turkmen clothes) , Sue Edwards and Loretta Cook shown here with our interpreter Jamila Del Mistro at Lindbergh awaiting the arrival of Turkmen.
Kirt travels frequently to Turkmenistan (How many people do you know who do this?!?) and has been invaluable in enriching the programs that Enrique Meza, Director of Programs, has designed for our visitors. Tourism Development is in town now.

Developing Mass Media April 9th thru 30th
We learned from our visitors that in Turkmenistan they do not report crime or natural disasters. While they were with us, the new president reversed the ‘ruler for life’s’ naming of the months of the year after his mother, etc. They were very glad to learn of this. One of the visitors, Yazmurad, was going home and immediately starting to learn English with a dream of returning to intern at Warner Brothers. We have since received word that he is already learning English. We support him in this dream.

Groovy Like A Movie studios (above) in San Diego and a VIP tour of Warner Brothers in Burbank were among the stops on the media tour for our visiting Turkmens. We are also hugely grateful to our Home Hosts who invite these visitors into their homes for three weeks!

5. Third World Progress
This came to us via new member Ron del Papa who sorts through the deluge of information and sends me the most vital.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUwS1uAdUcI&feature=related
Takes about 20 minutes to watch. Not only is it great information updating your idea of progress in the Third World, (Does anyone know where the Second World is…..) but the way the information is presented is absolutely top notch.
Most grateful,
