1. Citizen Diplomat Story: Oh the People You’ll Meet…
One of the benefits of being a member of CDCSD, is the opportunity to invite our international visitors to dinner in your home. I call this ‘dinner-table-diplomacy’.
You never know who you’ll meet.
One of the citizen diplomats in our network tells this story: “Many years ago,
I hosted in my home a distinguished visitor from Slovenia. That man, Janez Drnovsek, is now the president of the country."
STATS from our network read like this: Our visiting professionals have turned into more than 200 current and former Heads of State, 1,500 cabinet-level ministers, and many other distinguished world leaders in government and the private sector.
2. What do our visiting leaders learn while here and how does their idea of US change because they were with us?
From Bishnu Prasad Parajuli, Curriculum Officer, Ministry of Education and Sports, Nepal, we received this:
I widened the horizon of my knowledge of US school education.
I was really impressed with the school visits in San Diego. It is because Nepal, despite being small in size, is a multilingual country. Our population is about 23 million, with more than 100 different language communities. So we are trying to initiate bilingual classes in our schools. I learned some strategies you have adopted in your schools.
My job is to design school curricula and teacher's guide and students reading materials. During my US visit, I got an opportunity to learn how learning outcomes (results) are designed.
In my country, school totally depends on the government in regard to curriculum and textbooks. What I learn there, is that the success of school education mainly depends on the role of local community. So we are trying to make the policy to give the responsibility to local community to run their schools successfully.
I was thinking that the US schools teach prescribed textbooks and they have a national curriculum. But after my visit I realized that is wrong. There is no national curriculum, nor prescribed textbooks. I am surprised to see that even the pre-kindergarten children do project works. This is quite interesting.
I heartily appreciate your hospitality you provided to us.
Thank you for all I learned. - Bishnu
